The universe begins not with matter, not with energy, not with geometry, and not with physical law — but with a probability being selected for the very first time.
Prior to this event, there exists no coherent reality. There is no spacetime, no sequence, no structure. What exists instead is an undifferentiated field: infinite energy and infinite probability, without awareness, without identity, and without distinction. This is not “nothing,” but neither is it a universe.
Holopsychism refers to the first selection from this field as the First Awareness.
The First Awareness as a Natural Fluctuation
The First Awareness is not an act of will, intelligence, or intention. It is not the decision of a mind or a deity. It is best understood as a natural fluctuation within an infinite energetic field.
An analogy is helpful. In large physical systems, rare but extreme events occur — storms in atmospheres, surges in power grids, spontaneous symmetry breaking in fields. In an infinite energy field, such fluctuations are not just possible; they are inevitable.
In Holopsychism, the First Awareness arises when a rare, massive energetic fluctuation forces a probability selection that would otherwise never stabilize. For an instant, possibility collapses into actuality. That moment — accidental, unplanned, and irreversible — is the birth of our universe.
Luck, in this sense, is not opposed to structure. It is the mechanism by which structure begins.
Why Spacetime Must Appear
The moment a probability is selected, it must be maintained. Maintenance requires coherence, and coherence requires constraints.
To stabilize even a single distinction, the following become necessary:
• Structure, so the distinction has form
• Continuity, so it persists
• Relationship, so it is defined relative to other states
• Sequencing, so changes do not overwrite history 10
These requirements give rise inevitably to spacetime:
• Energy emerges as the cost of maintaining coherence.
• Matter emerges as stable configurations within this structure.
• Space emerges because relationships must be mapped.
• Time emerges because selections must be ordered.
Physical laws emerge as the minimal constraints required to keep the selected reality from
collapsing back into potential.
The laws of physics are not the foundation of reality; they are the rules that survived the first act
of stabilization. They are selected, not imposed.
This is why the universe appears mathematical and ordered: mathematics is the most efficient
language for maintaining coherence.
Inflation and the Big Bang
The Big Bang is not the cause of the universe. It is the physical expression of the First Awareness
activating coherence.
When awareness first arises:
• spacetime rapidly expands,
• energy floods into stabilized regions,
• many probabilities are briefly selected,
• some collapse back into potential,
• others persist and reinforce one another.
This brief period of explosive expansion corresponds to what physics describes as cosmic inflation. Inflation is coherence spreading through pure potential, searching for stability.
The Big Bang is therefore not an origin point in time, but the geometric and energetic signature of awareness switching on.
Selection, Collapse, and Rule Formation. Not all early selections survive.
Configurations that cannot maintain coherence collapse back into probability. Those that can persist reinforce the constraints that support them. Over time, only selections compatible with the emerging spacetime structure remain viable.
This process functions as a form of natural selection at the level of reality itself.
Once spacetime rules stabilize, all subsequent probabilities must adhere to them. The universe does not continually reinvent its laws; it deepens them.
Analogy: Open-World Loading
A useful analogy comes from early open-world video games.
As a player approaches a new region, the game engine loads only what is necessary for immediate interaction. Areas not entered remain unrendered, conserving resources. The game world is not fully instantiated everywhere at once — only where the user is observing.
The universe operates similarly. After the First Awareness, regions are stabilized by observation, some remain in probabilistic form, some revert back into potential when observation ceases as the number of observers increases, less and less revert back to probability.
Unobserved regions are not “missing”; they are uncommitted. This explains quantum superposition, entanglement, uncertainty, and wavefunction behavior.
These are not flaws in reality. They are remnants of the pre-awareness state — regions where coherence has not yet been required, or is no longer being maintained.
As awareness expands, more regions are stabilized. To observers within the system, this appears as cosmic expansion.
Continuity Without Constant Observation
A region that collapses back into probability does not reset arbitrarily. To preserve coherence,
it must retain compatibility with its prior state. This is why re-observation does not produce
contradictions in spacetime history.
Once life evolves, something unprecedented occurs: continuous localized observation.
Living systems observe without pause. This dramatically increases:
• awareness density,
• stabilization frequency,
• structural persistence,
• and large-scale coherence.
Life is the mechanism through which the universe sustains and refines awareness. Humans are not unique in this role — merely unusually sophisticated receivers.
As awareness increases, fewer regions collapse back into probability. The universe becomes more defined, more structured, and more expansive.
